► (1906-97) Biólogo estadounidense. Fue premio Nobel de Medicina y Fisiología en 1967, junto con Granit y Hartline, por sus trabajos sobre perceptiva visual.

Bioquímico estadounidense. Enseñó en la Universidad de Harvard en el período 1934–77. Sus destacadas contribuciones se refieren a la importancia de la vitamina A, los mecanismos de las reacciones fotoquímicas en los bastoncillos que posibilitan la visión nocturna, y la identificación de los pigmentos sensibles al color en los conos (ver fotorrecepción; retina). Compartió el Premio Nobel en 1967 con Haldan Keffer Hartline y Ragnar Arthur Granit. Fue un opositor prominente a la guerra de Vietnam.
